It wasn't quite the rally track he's used to but Jason Priestley was behind the wheel of a Mini Cooper as he turned up in Sydney to promote his latest TV series.

The actor, who also owns an IndyCar racing team and has driven rally cars himself, was guest of honour at the launch of the FX channel, which debuts on Australian screens later this month.

The Hollywood heartthrob walked the black carpet with his wife Naomi after speeding up the driveway of the eastern Sydney mansion Swifts for Wednesday night's launch.

Priestley has the lead role in the TV series Call Me Fitz which is premiering on the new channel in Australia.

He plays a used-car salesman with no morals, who he's described in interviews as 'an arrested adolescent'.

He said he hopes Australians respond to the show as well as everyone else has.

'The show is on in I think about 70 countries and it's done very well in all those countries.

'I just hope that although Australia came late to the party, they came to the party, and I just hope they get on board with everything the show has to offer.'

Priestley, who's best known for playing the squeaky-clean Brandon Walsh on Beverley Hills 90210 says he's found it hard to escape that character during his visit to Australia.

'Until I came here it was really easy to forget about that program but it seems that that show was very beloved here in Australia and people really have a soft spot still in their hearts for that show.'

'I've talked about it more here than I have in years,' he told reporters.

As well as Call Me Fitz, FX will feature the hit zombie series The Walking Dead, the crime drama Justified and the Western series Hell on Wheels starring Australian Ben Esler.

Esler also walked the black carpet for Wednesday night's launch, along with other celebrities including Paper Giants actor Rob Carlton, and radio personality Merrick Watts.
