The horse has fallen ill on a property in a rural area near Townsville, authorities say.

There was a proliferation of Hendra outbreaks in 2011, with 10 incidents in Queensland, and eight in NSW.

Previously, there had been 14 instances of the Hendra virus from 1994 to 2010, all of them in Queensland.

Queensland's Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Rick Symons is expected to give a media conference on the outbreak in Brisbane at noon (AEST) on Thursday.
