A mother and her son have been charged with murder over the stabbing death of a policeman in Sydney's northwest.

Detective Inspector Bryson Anderson, 45, was killed after responding to a domestic dispute at a rural property in Scheyville Rd, Oakville, about 2pm (AEST) on Thursday.

There were incorrect reports on Thursday afternoon about how Mr Anderson was killed.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione says Det Insp Anderson died following a knife attack, contrary to reports that he was killed with an axe or a bow and arrow.

'We will be alleging that a knife was used in this attack,' Commissioner Scipione told reporters in Sydney.

'A knife was used and led to the death.'

Mr Scipione says a 19-year-old man and his 45-year-old mother were arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with Det Insp Anderson's murder.
