Five people have been killed in a head-on crash on the Princes Freeway at Lara, near Geelong, southwest of Melbourne.
Police say they believe a car, driven by a 32-year-old woman was travelling on the wrong side of the Princes Freeway, collided with another vehicle travelling towards Melbourne just after 1am (AEDT) on Saturday.
The woman and four people in the other car in their early 20s were killed. Two other male passengers were seriously injured.
One man in critical condition was airlifted to Melbourne's Prince Alfred hospital while the other was taken by ambulance to the same hospital
The Major Collision Investigation Group is at the scene and Melbourne-bound motorists on the Princes Freeway will be diverted at Avalon Road into Lara and then back on to the freeway.
The road will be blocked for some time while police process the scene.
